Prof Rathinasamy
Maria Saleth is
currently the
Director of the
Madras Institute
of Development
Studies (MIDS),
Chennai, India.
Before joining
MIDS, Prof.
Saleth has been
a Principal
Researcher and
Senior
Institutional
Economist with
the
International
Water Management
Institute,
Colombo, Sri
Lanka. He has
also served as
honorary Adjunct
Professor at the
Centre for
Comparative
Water Law and
Policy, School
of International
Business,
University of
South Australia,
Adelaide,
Australia. He
has research,
teaching,
training, and
administrative
experience
spanning over 20
years in various
capacities in
different
organizations
both within and
outside India.
With his
specialization
in Resource and
Environmental
Economics,
Institutional
Economics, and
Quantitative
Techniques,
Prof. Saleth
works in the
areas of water
resource
management,
institutional
reform, and
agricultural
development and
has published
three books,
three edited
volumes, and
several papers
in journals and
edited volumes
related to these
areas. Prof.
Saleth has also
won several
awards for some
of his papers,
books, and works
from
professional
organizations
such as the
Indian Society
of Agricultural
Economics,
American Water
Resources
Association, and
International
Water
Association. He
has taught
graduate level
courses in
Economic Theory
and Optimization
Principles and
organized a
number of
training
programs in
Environmental
Economics to
college/university
teachers and
government
officials.
Besides his
regular academic
and research
activities,
Prof. Saleth has
also contributed
to the national
and
international
policy processes
by serving as
member in
several
committees,
expert panels,
and working
groups of the
Government of
India, UNDP,
UNESCO, and
World Water
Council and as
consultant to
the World Bank,
Food and
Agriculture
Organisation,
Asian
Development
Bank, and
UNESCAP. Prof.
Saleth has also
participated in
several national
and
international
conferences,
seminars, and
workshops as
participant,
resource person,
and keynote
speaker. He has
been the
Managing Editor
of the
Journal of
Social and
Economic
Development
(2000-02) and an
Associate Editor
of Water
Resources
Research
(since 2002).
Currently, Prof.
Saleth serves as
an Associate
