Abstract: The present study focuses on economic valuation of health impacts caused by water pollution form the bleaching and dying units in Tiruppur region, Tamil Nadu, India. Since the damage cost imposed by the industrial activities is not being properly accounted for in the measurement of regional sustainable development, the present study utilizes both revealed preference as well as stated preference methods to estimate such as damage, focusing mainly on the human health. This will help formulating appropriate welfare measures and environmental policies in order to improve the human well being in this region.

Title: Gender and Environment: A Critical Analysis with special reference to Wayanadu, Kerala.

Guide: Dr Ajit Menon.

Abstract: Human beings are part of the environment and their relationship to it is often mediated by gender. Gender means the socially structured power relations between men and women. These relations are not static and change over time and space. My PhD work will be in the broad area of gender and environment, most likely in the context of Kerala. I intend to look at how gender relationships mediate relationships to the environment and how that is socially-constructed. As a starting point, I will look at what the vast literature on the subject says about gendered environments and then examine this in a specific context.

Title: Bondo Highlanders at the Crossroad of Development and Change: A Critique and A Plea.

Guide: Dr Ananta Kumar Giri

Abstract: The study focuses on different tribal movements in Orissa that have been fighting for creating a space and hope for an alternative to development. Building on Foucault’s theory on power and discourse analysis and proposing to study resistance as a diagnostic of power, I argue that where there is resistance there is power. The resistance, more particularly the emergent alternative social power, creates a space for an alternative development as a dialectical, rather than hegemonic, encounter. The emergent power, therefore, is not just to question the old hegemonic politics but to seek for a new way of doing politics and a new way of sociability for construction of a different social power to not only fight against tyranny but also to mitigate misery.
