Ph.D. Admission – Notification

Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. programme at MIDS from candidates who have been awarded fellowships from UGC or any other funding agency for a minimum period of 3 years to carry out a Ph.D. in Social Science (Economics / Sociology / History / Political Science / Anthropology / Development Studies / Social Work).
Candidates without fellowship but wishing to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowships may also apply for admission in the Institute. Final selection for the ICSSR fellowship will be made by ICSSR as per their norms.
One Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship will be offered by MIDS to a deserving candidate on competitive basis. Institute will not provide any other fellowship.
Candidates from disadvantaged background/groups are encouraged to apply.
Selection of candidates will be based on the quality of research proposal, evaluation of the written test and interview, and the availability of supervisor for the chosen area of research. 1. Information on Fellowship
Candidate should possess a fellowship for a minimum period of three years. Additional fellowship support will not be available from the institute.
Those who wish to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship may also apply for admission to the Institute. Application for the ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship can be made only after the candidate’s (a) admission in MIDS, (b) admission and confirmed registration in the University of Madras and (c) Doctoral Committee is approved by the university. Fellowships may be granted by ICSSR as per conditions announced by ICSSR from time to time. MIDS does not provide fellowship to candidates. Ref: http://icssr.org/doctoral-fellowship .
Candidate selected for the Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship will be offered Rs. 10,000/- per month for three years.
2. Eligibility Criteria for Applications
Post-Graduation with at least 55% marks (50% marks, in the case of SC/ST candidates) or the equivalent grade in Economics, Sociology, History, Political Science, Anthropology, Development Studies or Social Work.
Candidates should have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or obtained an M.Phil.
Employed applicants must submit written consent from their employer at the time of joining the programme.
Age: Candidates should not be more than 35 years of age (relaxation in age by 5 years permissible in case of SC/ST candidates) as on the 01.04.2020.
Candidates applying for PhD will be able to apply for confirmed registration if their Postgraduate and MPhil degrees are in the same subject. Initial registration will be provisional for other candidates.
Once selected, successful completion of Ph.D. Foundation course at MIDS, run concurrently with the Ph.D. programme, is an essential requirement of the Institute. If the candidate fails to clear the course or register successfully with the University of Madras, the provisional admission of the candidate at the Institute will be cancelled.

4. Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will be called for a written test and an interview.
The final selection from the shortlisted candidates will be strictly on the basis of the quality of research proposal, evaluation of the candidate’s performance in the written test, interview and the availability of Supervisors in her/his area of specialisation.
The Institute reserves the right to reject any application without assigning any reason. The Institute is also not responsible for any postal loss/delays in communications.
5. Other Information
The Institute has no hostel facility, and the scholar has to find her/his own accommodation for the entire period of study at the Institute.
The selected candidates must follow all the rules and regulations of the Institute, applicable fellowship and the University of Madras in the conduct of their Ph. D. programme.
